For 1956, the reliable "Stovebolt" six was only available with standard transmission and was rated at 140 hp. The V8 put out 225 horses with the Power Pak option. The body style featured a full-width grille, new bumpers and a gas filler hidden behind the left side taillight. Bel Airs featured side trim that began at the beltline dip, ending at a spear tip at the front of the front fenders, and reversing direction, swooping down above the rear wheels to the tip of the rear bumper. A four-door hardtop version was introduced.
